the European Parliament has pass a resolution in support of\u00a0eCall<\/a>, an initiative to install devices in vehicles that automatically contact emergency services in the event of a crash.\u00a0The resolution<\/a>\u00a0calls on the European Condition to\u00a0make it mandatory for all new cars starting in 2015<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Sounds good, doesn’t it? \u00a0But just think about it for a second. \u00a0There you go, driving your car around. \u00a0And all of a sudden – BOOM – crash! \u00a0Not to worry. \u00a0Your car has a device installed that dials the emergency services and there is a digital conversation similar to this:<\/p>\n

– Hello, this is emergency services. \u00a0How can I help you?
\n– Hello, this is Mitsubishi Galant GDI. \u00a0Registration number XYZ123. \u00a0I’ve just crashed and need assistance.
\n– OK, please remain calm. \u00a0The help is on the way. \u00a0Whereabouts are you now?
\n– My map suggests that I am Pentadromos, Limassol, Cyprus. \u00a0My GPS coordinates are 34.680635, 33.043198.
\n– We’ve got you. \u00a0There is a unit nearby. \u00a0It should be at your location in approximately 2 minutes.
\n– Thank you. Bye.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This sounds so good, for when you really need help. \u00a0But there is another side to it – vehicle tracking. \u00a0How comfortable are you with someone else knowing where you went, how fast you went there, and for how long you stayed there? \u00a0And we aren’t talking just about the authorities here. \u00a0Think of all those hackers, script kiddies, private investigators, and then authorities.<\/p>\n
