Freakonomics<\/a> has an interesting article on pending parking tickets for a number of embassies in Washington D.C. and New York.<\/p>\n

In 2003, the state department issued dire warnings to embassies in New York and D.C. threatening to withhold foreign assistance if parking tickets were not paid. \u00a0So far though, it seems no foreign assistance has been withheld.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s D.C.\u2019s top offenders:<\/p>\n

Russia \u2013 $27,200
\nYemen \u2013 $24,600
\nCameroon \u2013 $19,520
\nFrance \u2013 $19,520
\nMauritania \u2013 $8,070<\/p>\n

The Holy See, it\u2019s worth noting, has only one outstanding ticket for $25.<\/p>\n

In New York, the list of top offenders is a different set:<\/p>\n

Egypt \u2013 $1,929,142
\nKuwait \u2013 $1,266,901
\nNigeria \u2013 $1,019,998
\nIndonesia \u2013 $692,200
\nBrazil \u2013 $608,733<\/p>\n

So what do these countries have in common? \u00a0Oil wealth? Moxie? In 2006,\u00a0Forbes Magazine hypothesized<\/a>\u00a0that it was the level of a country\u2019s corruption (according to the Corruption Perception Index) that predicted the level of parking ticket delinquency, along with a country\u2019s level of anti-American sentiment.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"\n
