{"id":15478,"date":"2011-09-08T11:22:04","date_gmt":"2011-09-08T09:22:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mamchenkov.net\/wordpress\/?p=15478"},"modified":"2011-09-08T11:22:04","modified_gmt":"2011-09-08T09:22:04","slug":"unix-learning-tips-from-miguel-de-icaza","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mamchenkov.net\/wordpress\/2011\/09\/08\/unix-learning-tips-from-miguel-de-icaza\/","title":{"rendered":"Unix learning tips from Miguel de Icaza"},"content":{"rendered":"<!-- google_ad_section_start -->\n<p>Miguel de Icaza &#8211; a very well known programmer in Linux circles &#8211; shares <a href=\"http:\/\/tirania.org\/blog\/archive\/2011\/Sep-06.html\">a few tips<\/a> to having a better experience in Unix environments. \u00a0Here is a summary of what he recommends:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Read, learn, and memorize the &#8220;Unix Programming Environment&#8221; book by Kernighan and Pike.<\/li>\n<li>Read and learn the &#8220;Unix for the impatient&#8221; book by Abrahams and Larson.<\/li>\n<li>Learn Emacs.<\/li>\n<li>Use Midnight Commander, which Miguel is the author of. \u00a0Here is a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chm.tu-dresden.de\/edv\/mc\/mc4.5\/manual1.html\">handy manual<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Keep a copy of the &#8220;Unix Power Tools&#8221; book nearby.<\/li>\n<li>Learn touch typing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These are all solid recommendations. \u00a0I&#8217;d suggest to use Vim instead of Emacs, but that&#8217;s more of a personal preference &#8211; learn one or the other. \u00a0And I can&#8217;t agree more on the touch typing. \u00a0That is indeed the most important skill that you will ever learn. \u00a0Right next to the camp fire starting.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>At this point you might be thinking &#8220;I am awesome&#8221;, &#8220;the world is my oyster&#8221; and &#8220;Avatar 3D was not such a bad movie&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>But unless you touch-type, you are neither awesome, nor you are in a position to judge the qualities of the world as an oyster or any James Cameron movies.<\/p>\n<p>You have to face the fact that not only you are a slow typist, you do look a little bit ridiculous.
