{"id":14971,"date":"2011-05-27T11:44:10","date_gmt":"2011-05-27T09:44:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mamchenkov.net\/wordpress\/?p=14971"},"modified":"2011-05-27T11:44:10","modified_gmt":"2011-05-27T09:44:10","slug":"firefox-4-is-awesome","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mamchenkov.net\/wordpress\/2011\/05\/27\/firefox-4-is-awesome\/","title":{"rendered":"Firefox 4 is awesome!"},"content":{"rendered":"<!-- google_ad_section_start -->\n<p>If you&#8217;ve been reading this blog for a while, you know that I switched my default browser a few times already.\u00a0 I went from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mozilla.com\/en-US\/firefox\/fx\/\">Mozilla Firefox<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opera.com\/\">Opera<\/a> to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/chrome\/\">Google Chrome<\/a> and back a few times.\u00a0 Recently, I&#8217;ve been very satisfied with Google Chrome.\u00a0 The main advantage of it is that its super fast.\u00a0 And the initial downside &#8211; extensions &#8211; got way better now.\u00a0 There is pretty much any extension that I need.\u00a0 Some extensions still have a bit of Firefox catching up to do, but overall, I&#8217;m covered.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Firefox_4\">Firefox 4<\/a> was released.\u00a0 There has been quite a few improvements, especially in the area that concerned me the most &#8211; performance.\u00a0 Firefox 4 is blazing fast.\u00a0 Not as fast as Google Chrome, but pretty close.\u00a0 But.\u00a0 It also has a few things that I wanted for a long time and that Google Chrome doesn&#8217;t have yet.\u00a0 Here are the two features that were a deciding factor for me to switch back to Firefox as my primary browser for the time being:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Tab groups.<\/li>\n<li>Browser sync with support of the Android.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Tab groups is a feature I wanted for a really long time.\u00a0 In fact, <a href=\"https:\/\/mamchenkov.net\/wordpress\/2007\/10\/31\/firefox-feature-wishlist-tab-groups\/\">I&#8217;ve blogged about it<\/a> back in <strong>October of 2007<\/strong>!\u00a0 I was using hundreds of open tabs back than and not having groups was a real pain.\u00a0 Now I am much more moderate with my tabs, but groups still make a lot of sense.\u00a0 Have a look at the screenshot below.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mamchenkov.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/firefox_tab_groups.png?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"14972\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/mamchenkov.net\/wordpress\/2011\/05\/27\/firefox-4-is-awesome\/firefox_tab_groups\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mamchenkov.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/firefox_tab_groups.png?fit=1209%2C606&amp;ssl=1\" data-orig-size=\"1209,606\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;}\" data-image-title=\"Firefox tab groups\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mamchenkov.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/firefox_tab_groups.png?fit=660%2C331&amp;ssl=1\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-14972\" title=\"Firefox tab groups\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mamchenkov.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/firefox_tab_groups-500x250.png?resize=500%2C250&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mamchenkov.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/firefox_tab_groups.png?resize=500%2C250&amp;ssl=1 500w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mamchenkov.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/firefox_tab_groups.png?resize=1024%2C513&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mamchenkov.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/firefox_tab_groups.png?w=1209&amp;ssl=1 1209w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With just a couple of clicks I can now group related tabs into groups.\u00a0 When I switch between groups, in the list of tabs I see only the tabs open within the current group.\u00a0 This saves plenty of time and confusion.\u00a0 Also it makes keeping track of open tabs much easier.\u00a0 Tabs can be dragged from one group to another group.\u00a0 Groups can be renamed, rearranged, resized, and so on.\u00a0 When I&#8217;m done with the task, I can close either a single tab or a whole group.\u00a0 And I can even undo the closing operation on both.\u00a0 Now that is the tool to boost productivity!<\/p>\n<p>The new Firefox 4 also has the browser synchronization functionality, with which one can sync several computers and (now) even mobile devices.\u00a0 You can choose what to synchronize and where. Bookmarks, history, passwords, form data, and even open tabs are supported! And this solves yet another problem for me.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve been looking for an elegant solution to send URLs from my desktop to the mobile and back.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a problem that I have on a daily basis.\u00a0 And now it&#8217;s solved!\u00a0 I simply installed Firefox 4 for Android on my mobile, enabled browser synchronization, and that was it.<\/p>\n<p>With these new features in, and much improved performance, I don&#8217;t see any reason for why I shouldn&#8217;t switch to Firefox 4.\u00a0 So that is exactly what I am doing starting today.<\/p>\n<p>On a separate note, I have to once again highlight how important are competition and open standards.\u00a0 Competition brings in the cutting edge technology and much improved end user experience.
