{"id":14707,"date":"2011-04-07T00:53:31","date_gmt":"2011-04-06T22:53:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mamchenkov.net\/wordpress\/?p=14707"},"modified":"2011-04-07T00:53:31","modified_gmt":"2011-04-06T22:53:31","slug":"recommendation-engine-that-finally-makes-sense-google-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mamchenkov.net\/wordpress\/2011\/04\/07\/recommendation-engine-that-finally-makes-sense-google-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Recommendation engine that finally makes sense &#8211; Google +1"},"content":{"rendered":"<!-- google_ad_section_start -->\n<p>I&#8217;ve heard plenty of rumors about an upcoming Google social network. \u00a0I have no idea if they are true, and really I don&#8217;t care. \u00a0I have enough social networks as it is. \u00a0But what I haven&#8217;t heard about until now is <a href=\"http:\/\/googleblog.blogspot.com\/2011\/03\/1s-right-recommendations-right-when-you.html\">Google +1<\/a> &#8211; a new recommendation engine that Google is trying out.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"660\" height=\"372\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OAyUNI3_V2c?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div><\/p>\n<p>At first, when I read about Google +1 and that it was yet another attempt for recommendation engine for Google search results, I didn&#8217;t think it was interesting at all. \u00a0There were a number of tries in that area &#8211; some of them long gone, some still alive. \u00a0I&#8217;m talking about results reordering via drag-and-drop, starring of result items, and others.<\/p>\n<p>All of them shared the same problem &#8211; promoting items from within search results doesn&#8217;t work very well, because the user hasn&#8217;t yet visited the page itself. \u00a0He&#8217;s eager to navigate away from the results. \u00a0And on top of that, page title, description, and a thumbnail aren&#8217;t always enough to make a judgement.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, recommendation engines are doing pretty well with social networks like Facebook, Digg, Twitter, and others. \u00a0Every other page on the web has a share button that supports one or more social networks. \u00a0And people use those. \u00a0Even though sharing pages on Facebook and Twitter might be useful, it isn&#8217;t as useful as increasing the karma of those pages in order to rank them higher in your future search results.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s where Google +1 comes in. \u00a0It makes perfect sense. \u00a0Now you can search Google, visit the results, and +1 those of them that you liked (and, of course, those of them that support the Google +1 sharing). \u00a0Not only it would be trivial to push those +1 to other social networks, but also now users have way more stimuli to share things, since that would improve their own search results.<\/p>\n<p>Google +1 is yet available to everyone.
