flags to Gnome keyboard layout switch"},"content":{"rendered":"<!-- google_ad_section_start -->\n<p>One of the little things that has been bugging me for a few years now is the Gnome keyboard layout switch. \u00a0I am using two layouts &#8211; English and Russian &#8211; and instead of having two nice flags, like in KDE, I had to live with &#8216;USA&#8217; and &#8216;RUS&#8217; letters in my task bar. \u00a0Not that big of a problem, but annoying. \u00a0Icons are much easier and faster to understand than text. \u00a0And all the other things in my task bar are graphical, so the text stands out too much.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mamchenkov.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/taskbar.png?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" finally decided to do something about. \u00a0Thanks to <a href=\"http:\/\/ubuntuforums.org\/showthread.php?t=528890\">this forum<\/a> post I had a solution in hand which almost worked. \u00a0The steps were:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Download <em>en.png<\/em> and <em>ru.png<\/em> icons into <em>~\/.icons\/flags\/<\/em> folder.<\/li>\n<li>Run <em>gconf-editor<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Change the value of <em>\/desktop\/gnome\/peripherals\/keyboard\/indicator\/showFlags<\/em> to <em>true<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The only thing that went wrong for me were the actual images. \u00a0Gnome scaled them to 24&#215;24 pixels and they looked rater ugly. \u00a0So I created my own icons using Gimp. \u00a0I created a new image 24&#215;24 pixels with transparent background and then dropped in the center of it the flag icon that I got from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.famfamfam.com\/lab\/icons\/flags\/\">FamFamFam icon set<\/a>. \u00a0Saved the results back into the <em>~\/.icons\/flags\/<\/em> folder and
