{"id":11626,"date":"2009-07-08T22:31:16","date_gmt":"2009-07-08T20:31:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mamchenkov.net\/blog\/?p=182"},"modified":"2009-07-08T22:31:16","modified_gmt":"2009-07-08T20:31:16","slug":"forget-the-url","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mamchenkov.net\/wordpress\/2009\/07\/08\/forget-the-url\/","title":{"rendered":"Forget the URL"},"content":{"rendered":"<!-- google_ad_section_start -->\n<p>Just yesterday I was talking with a few people about the Web and how things are changing, and the subject of URLs came up.\u00a0 And I shared my opinion on the matter &#8211; URLs don&#8217;t matter.\u00a0 Before you start arguing, I want to make it clear that I do understand that there are exceptions to every rule and no assumption stays true forever.\u00a0 But on the other hand, that&#8217;s what I believe.<\/p>\n<p>I think every Web surfer answers this question to himself at certain point in time.\u00a0 Are all these URLs that I visited, searched for, and bookmarked over the years matter?\u00a0 And I suspect that quite a few of those people will answer as I do &#8211; &#8220;no&#8221;.\u00a0 I had a sneaky suspicion for some time, but it was delicious social bookmarks web service that made me confident about this.<\/p>\n<p>The thing with delicious is that initially it was available at <a href=\"http:\/\/del.icio.us\">http:\/\/del.icio.us<\/a> .\u00a0 And as you might guess, there quite a few problems with this URL.\u00a0 Firstly, the word &#8220;<em>delicious<\/em>&#8221; is not in the active vocabulary of most non-native English speakers.\u00a0 Secondly, even those who know the word, have troubles spelling it correctly.\u00a0 Thirdly, those who know how to spell it, never seem to guess where to put the dots.\u00a0 And fourthly, the logical line between the meaning of the word &#8220;delicious&#8221; and a social bookmarking web site is vague at best.<\/p>\n<p>However, that didn&#8217;t stop del.icio.us from becoming the most popular social bookmarking web site on the Web.\u00a0 And that was when I became confident in that the URLs don&#8217;t matter any more.\u00a0 Very few people will remember them.\u00a0 Most people will find the site with the help of a search engine.\u00a0 And those who are really interested in getting back to it, will bookmark it.\u00a0 It&#8217;s that simple.<\/p>\n<p>What about brand names, you ask?\u00a0 Brand names are important.\u00a0 But you can avoid linking brand names to URLs.\u00a0 What about people&#8217;s names?\u00a0 Only a few will remember them.\u00a0 What about original, non-standard domain names?\u00a0 Only few of those will be remembered, the rest will search and bookmark.\u00a0 Why do I have mamchenkov.net domain name then?\u00a0 Because it was available and because it links to my name nicely.\u00a0 If it wasn&#8217;t there, I&#8217;d use something else.\u00a0 And, in fact, I did use a couple of other domains before I registered mamchenkov.net .<\/p>\n<p>Why all of a sudden I started talking about it?\u00a0 Because today I came across someone else saying practically the same thing &#8211; &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/news.cnet.com\/8301-17852_3-10276727-71.html?part=rss&amp;subj=news&amp;tag=2547-1_3-0-20\">Do URLs matter anymore?<\/a>&#8221; article over at CNET News, and I quote:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>People still try to trade the most simple URLs for hopeful hundreds of thousands. They will still line up in the hope of getting a vanity URL from Facebook.\u00a0 But don&#8217;t most people simply go to the little search box, type in the name of what they&#8217;re looking for, and search?\u00a0 If it&#8217;s something they want to go back to, they&#8217;ll bookmark it. But they won&#8217;t remember what the URL is.
