{"id":11603,"date":"2009-06-23T15:56:35","date_gmt":"2009-06-23T13:56:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mamchenkov.net\/blog\/?p=87"},"modified":"2009-06-23T15:56:35","modified_gmt":"2009-06-23T13:56:35","slug":"history-of-the-world-through-a-game","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mamchenkov.net\/wordpress\/2009\/06\/23\/history-of-the-world-through-a-game\/","title":{"rendered":"History of the world through a game"},"content":{"rendered":"<!-- google_ad_section_start -->\n<p>We had a few discussions about <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Civilization_IV\">Civilization IV<\/a> game today in the office.\u00a0 I wasn&#8217;t paying much attention as I am not a big fan of strategy games, especially turn-based strategy games.\u00a0 But at some point I was looking at this technology research tree diagram (click for full-sized version, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.civfanatics.com\/gallery\/files\/1\/techtree_original.jpg\">source<\/a>).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_89\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-89\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mamchenkov.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/techtree_original.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-89\" title=\"Technology tree\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mamchenkov.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/techtree_original-500x62.jpg?resize=500%2C62&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Civilization IV technology tree\" width=\"500\" height=\"62\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-89\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Civilization IV technology tree<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>And I couldn&#8217;t help to get impressed on how far the world has come in terms of research.\u00a0 And also how much was actually discovered in the last few decades.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, I know, not everything on that diagram is a technology, and not everything was actually researched.\u00a0 But, on the other hand, there are many technologies which were researched and worked on, and they aren&#8217;t on that tree diagram.<\/p>\n<p>A diagram like this provides a perspective on how much people knew back in the early days and how much more complex (not necessarily complicated) the modern world is.\u00a0 Of course, when playing such a game against a few opponents, the perspective becomes even more realistic &#8211; the more stuff you have researched, the more you can do and more powerful is your nation.<\/p>\n<p>If only now we could incorporate these games with history classes somehow &#8230;<\/p>\n<!-- google_ad_section_end -->\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<!-- google_ad_section_start -->\n<p>We had a few discussions about Civilization IV game today in the office.\u00a0 I wasn&#8217;t paying much attention as I am not a big fan of strategy games, especially turn-based strategy games.\u00a0 But at some point I was looking at this technology research tree diagram (click for full-sized version, source).
