{"id":11296,"date":"2008-06-06T01:17:07","date_gmt":"2008-06-05T22:17:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mamchenkov.net\/wordpress\/?p=11296"},"modified":"2010-03-29T23:14:36","modified_gmt":"2010-03-29T21:14:36","slug":"can-you-handle-the-popularity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mamchenkov.net\/wordpress\/2008\/06\/06\/can-you-handle-the-popularity\/","title":{"rendered":"Can you handle the popularity?"},"content":{"rendered":"<!-- google_ad_section_start -->\n<p>Looking around the blogosphere, I see more and more bloggers who work really hard on promoting their sites.\u00a0 They optimize their themes for Google, submit blog to all sorts of directories, share links to their best content via social networks, microblog, and comment all around the web.<br \/>\nWell, that&#8217;s all fine.\u00a0 But here is the questions &#8211; can they handle the popularity?<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been thinking about it before, but it came all to me suddenly yesterday and today.\u00a0 One of my recent posts got submitted to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reddit.com\">reddit.com<\/a> and it somehow it went through to the main page of the site, and from there got aggregated via RSS to a lot of other places.\u00a0 Within 24 hours, my blog received more than 20,000 views.\u00a0 Compared to an average day, which brings much under a thousand, that&#8217;s a lot.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"11297\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/mamchenkov.net\/wordpress\/2008\/06\/06\/can-you-handle-the-popularity\/stats_spike\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mamchenkov.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/06\/stats_spike.png?fit=500%2C235&amp;ssl=1\" data-orig-size=\"500,235\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;}\" data-image-title=\"Stats spike\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mamchenkov.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/06\/stats_spike.png?fit=500%2C235&amp;ssl=1\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11297 aligncenter\" title=\"Stats spike\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mamchenkov.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/06\/stats_spike.png?resize=500%2C235&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"235\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mamchenkov.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/06\/stats_spike.png?w=500&amp;ssl=1 500w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mamchenkov.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/06\/stats_spike.png?resize=300%2C141&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This sounds like a dream come true for any blogger, no?\u00a0 Well, it is, sort of.\u00a0 But.\u00a0 Consider the other side of the story, which is not so obvious from the first glance:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>My hosting company handled the spike really well &#8211; no complaints or disconnections.\u00a0 Not all hosting companies are created equal.<\/li>\n<li>Commenting form on my blog was broken at the time of the spike.\u00a0 It was down the whole spike duration.<\/li>\n<li>There were about 500 comments posted in the reddit.com thread.<\/li>\n<li>I&#8217;ve received almost 100 emails.<\/li>\n<li>When commenting form got fixed, I got another dozen or so comments, plus another SPAM wave along with it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you imagine for a moment all that coming upon you in the middle of the working week, you&#8217;ll see a problem.\u00a0 Who and how should respond to all that?<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve spent half a day today talking with my hoster about the commenting form.\u00a0 Gladly it got fixed (the problem was session misconfiguration on the hosting company side).\u00a0 Then I needed some time to respond to all those emails. In the meantime I quickly reviewed and approved all comments in the moderation queue.\u00a0 That pretty much ate my day, together with some things I managed to slide in at work.<\/p>\n<p>Later in the evening, when my family went to sleep, I actually read all the comments and responded to a few.\u00a0 I also read through most comments at reddit.com .\u00a0 Can I reply to any of those?\u00a0 Nope.\u00a0 That&#8217;s out of my resources.\u00a0 <strong>I can&#8217;t handle all the traffic that came in.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Can you?\u00a0 What will happen to your server if you&#8217;ll get digged or slashdotted?\u00a0 How can you moderate all the comments?\u00a0 How can you handle replies?\u00a0 What about comments at other places &#8211; blogs, forums, and social networks that brought you in the traffic?\u00a0 Do you have any moderators on standby?\u00a0 Do you have any monitoring setup (Google Alerts, coComment, etc) for remote discussions about your content?<\/p>\n<p>If you aren&#8217;t thinking about those things while promoting your blog, you are in for a big surprise&#8230;<\/p>\n<!-- google_ad_section_end -->\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<!-- google_ad_section_start -->\n<p>Looking around the blogosphere, I see more and more bloggers who work really hard on promoting their sites.\u00a0 They optimize their themes for Google, submit blog to all sorts of directories, share links to their best content via social networks, microblog, and comment all around the web.
