Mashable reports<\/a> that source code for Movable Type<\/a> is finally open sourced.\u00c2\u00a0 Movable Type is a blogging platform competing with WordPress, LiveJournal, and others.<\/p>\n

These are, of course, good news for open source community.\u00c2\u00a0 The more open source software we have, the better.\u00c2\u00a0 And Movable Type is a somewhat high profile piece of software.\u00c2\u00a0 It used to be more popular a little while ago, and then many of its fans moved to WordPress<\/a> and other alternatives.<\/p>\n

One thing I wanted to note together with these news, is that it’s not only about open source.\u00c2\u00a0 Just putting up the code out there for the general public to grab and modify it is not enough.\u00c2\u00a0 It’s about the community too.\u00c2\u00a0 Someone has to lead, support, and inspire people to try, test, develop, document, and praise.\u00c2\u00a0 Someone has to listen and react.\u00c2\u00a0 This last part is one of the most difficult tasks in open source development.\u00c2\u00a0 And there are plenty examples to prove it (just look at most of the stuff at Freshmeat.net<\/a> or SourceForge.net<\/a>).<\/p>\n

WordPress guys are terrific at driving their community.\u00c2\u00a0 With Six Apart<\/a> manage to compete with that?\u00c2\u00a0 We’ll see…<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"\n
