{"id":10843,"date":"2007-09-27T12:46:06","date_gmt":"2007-09-27T09:46:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mamchenkov.net\/wordpress\/2007\/09\/27\/tagging-thoughts\/"},"modified":"2007-09-27T12:46:06","modified_gmt":"2007-09-27T09:46:06","slug":"tagging-thoughts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mamchenkov.net\/wordpress\/2007\/09\/27\/tagging-thoughts\/","title":{"rendered":"Tagging thoughts"},"content":{"rendered":"<!-- google_ad_section_start -->\n<p>This post is somewhat related to my previous rant &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/mamchenkov.net\/wordpress\/2007\/09\/26\/the-mess-with-notes\/\">The mess with notes<\/a>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>One of the things that I lost control of are my bookmarks.\u00c2\u00a0 At one point in time I decided that my bookmarks are the same as, or rather a part of, my notes.\u00c2\u00a0 And I started to treat them the same way.\u00c2\u00a0 And they ended up in the mess together with my notes.\u00c2\u00a0 But I was wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Bookmarks can be managed rather nicely with one of the many web services out there.\u00c2\u00a0 I always enjoyed the way <a href=\"http:\/\/del.icio.us\">del.icio.us<\/a> does that and I don&#8217;t know what got into me, that I stopped using it.\u00c2\u00a0 Actually, no, I know.\u00c2\u00a0 I stopped using del.icio.us when I messed up all my bookmarks.\u00c2\u00a0 No surprise there.<\/p>\n<p>The thing that got terribly wrong with my bookmarks was tagging.\u00c2\u00a0 Tagging is still a concept that many people try to put their heads around, but a few years ago it was even worse.\u00c2\u00a0 I like tagging in that it does not require any strict hierarchy.\u00c2\u00a0 But my mistake was thinking that tagging does not require strict rules.<\/p>\n<p>Without strict rules it&#8217;s very easy to end up in the mess.\u00c2\u00a0 In a mess that I am in right now.\u00c2\u00a0 For example, I started tagging RSS related pages with &#8220;aggregator&#8221;, &#8220;aggregators&#8221;, &#8220;feed&#8221;, &#8220;feeds&#8221;, &#8220;xml&#8221;, &#8220;rss&#8221;, &#8220;atom&#8221;.\u00c2\u00a0 That&#8217;s just too much.\u00c2\u00a0 And later I started worrying that I won&#8217;t find some bookmark unless I tag it with all of those.\u00c2\u00a0 My tags grew like mushrooms after rain.<\/p>\n<p>What I should have done is tag bookmarks with as specific tags as possible.\u00c2\u00a0 If the page is about RSS, it should be tagged with &#8220;rss&#8221;, not with &#8220;aggregators&#8221; and &#8220;xml&#8221; and &#8220;feeds&#8221;.\u00c2\u00a0 &#8220;blogging&#8221; is about the worst tag ever.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s too generic.\u00c2\u00a0 It should be either &#8220;wordpress&#8221; or &#8220;writing&#8221; or &#8220;seo&#8221; or something like this.<\/p>\n<p>But I&#8217;m going to fix that.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;m removing all bundles, tags, and bookmarks from my del.icio.us account right now (gotta love Perl for things like <a href=\"http:\/\/search.cpan.org\/~ascope\/Net-Delicious-1.11\/lib\/Net\/Delicious.pm\">Net::Delicioius<\/a>).\u00c2\u00a0 They are too messed up even for me to use.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;ll start from scratch.\u00c2\u00a0 And I&#8217;ll see where it&#8217;ll get me. \u00c2\u00a0 And this time around, I&#8217;ll try to use descriptions too.\u00c2\u00a0 They are much more helpful than I thought or cared for originally.<\/p>\n<!-- google_ad_section_end -->\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<!-- google_ad_section_start -->\n<p>This post is somewhat related to my previous rant &#8220;The mess with notes&#8220;.
