{"id":10035,"date":"2006-04-05T19:00:29","date_gmt":"2006-04-05T16:00:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mamchenkov.net\/wordpress\/2006\/04\/05\/home-synchronization-puzzle-no-solution-yet\/"},"modified":"2006-04-05T19:00:29","modified_gmt":"2006-04-05T16:00:29","slug":"home-synchronization-puzzle-no-solution-yet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mamchenkov.net\/wordpress\/2006\/04\/05\/home-synchronization-puzzle-no-solution-yet\/","title":{"rendered":"$HOME synchronization puzzle (no solution yet)"},"content":{"rendered":"<!-- google_ad_section_start -->\n<p>I am entering a new era of computing.<\/p>\n<p>Until recently, I had two primary computers &#8211; at home and at work.\u00c2\u00a0 Each one was for it&#8217;s own tasks.\u00c2\u00a0 If I needed to access one or the other &#8211; I always could do so directly, from one to another.\u00c2\u00a0 But that time is over.<\/p>\n<p>Now I have more computers &#8211; NOC workstation at the office, my personal notebook, and a few more are coming.\u00c2\u00a0 They are also connected in a more complicated ways &#8211; not all of them are accessible directly from all other.\u00c2\u00a0 Working remotely passing through intermediate nodes is possible, but is not much fun.<\/p>\n<p>One of the main annoyances is the difference of the command line environment.\u00c2\u00a0 Some computers are fine tuned to completely satisfy my needs.\u00c2\u00a0 Others have only a subset of settings.\u00c2\u00a0 Yet others &#8211; are untouched in this regard.<\/p>\n<p>My environment should not be a full copy of the same thing across all machines, but rather a set of settings, which can be combined differently depending on a number of factors, like hostnames, usernames, software versions, etc.<\/p>\n<p>I used to copy relevant parts of my configurations manually from one machine to another.\u00c2\u00a0 Then I wrote a simple script to do so.\u00c2\u00a0 Then the\u00c2\u00a0 script got more complex and messy.\u00c2\u00a0 It is time to change it.<\/p>\n<p>After some surfing around I&#8217;ve decided to create a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&#038;ct=res&#038;cd=1&#038;url=http%3A\/\/subversion.tigris.org\/&#038;ei=itg0ROmUNbHUwgGByanMAw&#038;sig2=WZHk0LwKHljtXU6qp5Og3g\">Subversion<\/a> repository to store my home directories, or at least those parts that I need across a few machines. It seems like the most clean solution.<\/p>\n<p>There are a few success stories on the Web that describe solutions for different scenarios.\u00c2\u00a0 They are all pretty close, but not exactly what I need.\u00c2\u00a0 It seems that I&#8217;ll have to work out a solution of my own.\u00c2\u00a0 Currently I am considering two possible ways.\u00c2\u00a0 Both of them, as usual, have their pros and cons.\u00c2\u00a0 None of them is yet perfect though.<\/p>\n<p>If you have any experience with this or have any thoughts on this, please let me know.\u00c2\u00a0 URLs are especially appreciated.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;ll keep you updated on my progress too.<\/p>\n<!-- google_ad_section_end -->\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<!-- google_ad_section_start -->\n<p>I am entering a new era of computing.
