Monster-in-Law

Monster-in-Law (2005)Comedy is one of my favourite genres, but movies aren’t coming as often as I’d want them to. Especially good ones. So I pretty much have a chance of watching everything that gets tagged as “Funny”. Today’s random pick is “Monster-in-Law“.

Directed by: Robert Luketic
Genres: Comedy, Romance
Cast: Jennifer Lopez, Jane Fonda, Michael Vartan, Wanda Sykes, Adam Scott, Annie Parisse, Monet Mazur, Elaine Stritch, Will Arnett, Stephen Dunham, Randee Heller, Mark Moses, Tomiko Fraser, Rochelle Flexer, Wayne Nickel
IMDB raintg: 5.0
My rating: 7.0 [rate 7.0]

Family is one of the best sources for humor ever. I guess it’s the part of not being able to choose the complete set of relatives combined with the duty to live, meet, and spend time with them that makes it so funny. Social differences multiplied by age differences doubled by gender misunderstandings – that’s a universe of possibilities.

Monster-in-Law” is an excellent movie that exploits the family source of laughter. Especially the mother-in-law side of it.

The ratio of jokes is good and is constantly increasing as the movie progresses. The casting is excellent too with Jennifer Lopez and Jane Fonda playing the “enemies”. There are also good supporting characters (especially Wanda Sykes, who plays Ruby, the personal assitant of the monster-in-law).

Resume: good romantic comedy which is good for family watching. That is if you don’t have kids below 13 or so.
