Robots

Some people might get scared away from parenthood by the dramatic decrease of number of movies that I watch recently. To keep them calm and demonstrate that it is actually possible to find some time for a movie or two, both Olga and I watched “Robots” today.

Directed by: Chris Wedge, Carlos Saldanha
Genres: Animation, Comedy, Family, Fantasy, Sci-Fi
Cast: Halle Berry, Lucille Bliss, Terry Bradshaw, Jim Broadbent, Mel Brooks, Amanda Bynes, Drew Carey, Jennifer Coolidge, Dylan Denton, Will Denton, Marshall Efron, Damien Fahey, Lowell Ganz, Paul Giamatti, Dan Hedaya
IMDB raintg: 6.4
My rating: 8.0 [rate 8.0]

Simply said, “Robots” is an old story done right. There weren’t anything unexpected in either plot or characters, but the amount of details kept both Olga and me glued to the screen. This is one of those animations that even adults can watch a billion times and find new angles. Additionally to the angles there’s lots and lots of language play. Many phrases and signs carry double meaning, like a poor robot begging for money with a sign on his chest reading “Got screwed” or the robot repair shop called “Jack Hammer’s”. There is so much of these in the movie that I am sure I missed more than half.

Another good side of this animation is that voices are all new. I’ve got a bit tired of the same famous voices in the animations recently. This one stars B-stars which are really really hard to guess, but make for good vocals.

Oh, and the music. Instead of the regular lame Disney stuff by Elton John and the company, there is some real rocking and rolling here.

And movies spoofs – plenty of them. With all the dynamics I didn’t have time to guess much, but I’ll surely try again with the next watching.

Anyway, the animation is very entertaining, with lots of jokes for both kids and adults. And it is nicely paced too – very dynamic and doesn’t leave any time for boredom.

Highly recommended. Now, if they would just have picked an orginal story…
