The Aviator

A whole bunch of good films came out recently, which I didn’t have the time to watch. One of them is “The Aviator“.

IMDB rating: 7.5
My rating: 8.0
Celebrity highlights: directed by Martin Scorsese; starrs Leonardo DiCaprio, Cate Blanchett, Alec Baldwin, John C. Reilly, Ian Holm, and others.

I’ll be honest with you – I am not a big fan of Martin Scorsese work, except for “Goodfellas” and “Casino” and now
The Aviator“. He is a talanted director, but his movies don’t appeal to me.

The three movies of his that I liked were about passion. “Goodfellas” was about the bunch of guys who passionatly wanted to become accepted as a crime syndicate. They did everything they could for their dream to come true. And there is a huge drama at the end when they don’t succeed. “Casino” is about another guy, who’s passion is his casino. He works hard to maintain one and to manouver between other sharks who want to get it. There is again a huge drama by the end, when he falls. “The Aviator” is also about passion. It is about a guy who loves aviation so much that he puts his whole life into it, with everything that he has. This time though, Scorsese allows his main character to succeed. It’s not that much of a happy ending though. Imagine the guy who is handicapped by airplane crash, who is under the investigation by the government, who is pressed by the monopoly of Pan American airlines… and he whispers in delirum “It is the future… it is the future… it is the future…”. In fact, the end can be seen as a demise of a person, but a success of his idea. Pretty sad.

There are many more sides to the film than directorship though. Acting, for example. There was plenty of great acting in this film. Leonardo DiCaprio did really great. I was really impressed. There were a lot of supporting characters in the movie and they old did good too. The casting was really exceptional.

There was a lot of great music. Jazz was present though out the film and helped in setting the atmosphere. It also helped in keeping the audience in the past. There wasn’t a lot of other details that reminded of the past, so the music really helped.

Another side of the film that I liked was linguistic. There were few excellent accents, which I wasn’t much familiar with and that I had trouble understanding at first. Some sounded southern, some I didn’t even have an idea.

Anyway, the film is very interesting from many perspectives, and is surely much more than just worth the time. Make an efforst – watch it.

  1. DiCaprio is a very talented actor no matter anyone says about him. I do not consider “box offices” his best movies. I saw a couple of his early movies and his acting is great. Dont remember the titles – in one he plays drug addicted and in another one mentally ill guy with Jonny Depp co-starring. The latest movie i’ve seen worth watching is “The city of lost children”. French film, very bizarre and weird with great cinematography. Very strange film. I like strange films :-). Like “научнаÑ? Ñ?екциÑ? пилотов”

  2. According to IMDB, Leonardo DiCaprio played a drug addict in “The Basketball Diaries” (1995) and he co-starred with Johny Depp in “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape” (1993). I have added both films to my list of movies to see.

I agree that DiCaprio is a talanted actor. I have to watch a few more of his movies. I liked him also in “Catch Me If You Can” (2002). “The Beach” (2000) and “Gangs of New York” (2002) weren’t any good at all. So I guess it is all about picking the right ones… :)

  3. The Beach is a good movie i must admit. Catch me if u can has a interesting plot and no matter actors are involved it will be still watchable. Scorsese’s latest movies are “ni riba ni miaso”. They watchable but leave no “trace” inside u. Also check out documentaries like “Baraka”, “Koyaanisqatsi / Powaqqatsi”, “Naqoyqatsi”. I dont think u can find them at DVD shop. I bought them form A.

  4. If you have these documentaries, maybe I can borrow them from you for a few days… I can give you something in return, though I have a really small DVD library – only a few of my favourite movies.

  5. Good good. I am interested in Matrix too, but I don’t have that much time on my hands these days. By the way, when I saw this box at your place it gave a nice idea for a present for someone. Hehe. :)

  6. Ok man u have plenty of time during sleepless nights :-) Just let me know if u want them and i’ll bring them to the office so its easy for u to pick them up. Lord of the Rings Box set also avaliable

  7. I’ll be in office on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday during the business hours. If you’ll bring them to the office, I can pick them up at lunch time.

And I have my own Lord of the Rings. Thanks anyway. :)
